Well, the economy's what inspired the idea -- but I've always liked the idea of farming and living with the land.
This new house on a little over an acre...kinda just happened to my family...and then...
this idea was born.
I've always intended on starting my own business or career, and to try to be more or less been independent from the rest of society...but this idea just fit it perfectly. Especially now that the economy's made my original ideas less likely now.
"Wait, wait." You're saying. "Business? I thought you were just micro-farming for you and yours!"
Nope. A business. Plus me and mine.
You see, I love trends. I really, really do. So I try to keep up on how the world's going.
In my neck of the woods, organic farming's really the only booming business around. And no matter where you look in this country, the only profitable land to live on is now in the country.
And if anything, I try to be practical.
Organic food is very cheap (compared to corporate farming anyways) to make and work with. Especially on a small-scale basis. Indeed, it takes more attention and if it's just you and maybe a friend or family member it takes slightly more physical work...but it's very gratifying, good for the environment, AND good for your area locally especially if you make a business out of it.
I'm fully aware that my ideas are never small projects, but this is America, right? I'm allowed to dream big.
And at least, this is something that relies on my hands...not unknown circumstances up in the air.
Everyone always needs food.
"So...how're you gonna make it profitable?"
Well, this is basic business sense here...you find a way to produce something someone wants and then you calculate how to make a profit based on the original money (and occasionally effort) spent.
So, I only buy so many seeds/plants for a couple dollars.
So, for example if I plant six tomato plants for a couple dollars (which'd be what you'd pay for a packet of seeds) and I charged, for example a quarter per tomato or a dollar a bunch I'd be paid back in much less than a week and be making a profit immediately after that's accomplished.
For those of you who're rolling your eyes, going; "I know the basics of business, I mean how do you expect to compete with the grocery stores?"
Well, recent surveys suggest that consumers are willing to make changes in purchases. In fact, there is much less of a stigma against organically grown things today than their used to be. A decent percentage of people saying that they want to eat more organic foods because of the health benefits.
Grocery stores, because of transportation costs, have had frequently less affordable foods.
Even though it looks like fuel might go down in cost, that doesn't take away all the droughts, flood, hurricanes, and tornados we've had globally. Especially in major food-producing locations.
And I like to sell cheap goods. If I got the good cheap, then my Goddess I will sell them for cheap.
"Well, OK. Sure. But how will you get your goods to the consumers, aren't they far away?"
Yes, yes they are. But not that far. Sure, fuel costs are still an issue for me too...but I'm hoping to get a scooter and attach a trailer or basket to the back to transport what I'm going to sell -- this works decent for the farmer's market which is just eight miles away.
For larger sales trips, I would undoubtably have to pay someone to transport me and my goods.
I've no problem with paying my Mom in vegetables and pies, or other things for her to sell...because she sells things at flea markets and online -- and if we get really good at it, then we could go pro and sell at flea markets across the country.
I know it'll take years to make a decent living: therefore my starting now. My Mom started a little while back. Her goal wasn't originally to make money, it was just a hobby. But now it's more of a necessity than anything.
"OK. But are you forgetting that this is a health site?"
Not at all. This is our goal for healthy living. You realize that my trying to start a business is on part two of this whole thing right? Part of it's going toward providing healthier meals year 'round to my family! Plus, it provides us lots and lots of exercise.
And if the local health of our area isn't something, or the health of our plants doesn't count toward something...then I'm not sure what this site is for besides self-gratification lol. Which I don't have a problem with...but yeah.
This is almost like a FAQ page, isn't it? *laughs*
Granted...that this blog's only existed for a few hours...*cough*
Haha. Yeah..>_>

Sounds like you're on the cutting edge of what our nation will look like some years down the road. I hope you have great success.

Aw, thanks.
Well it certainly would be nice to see more and more people doing stuff like this in the future.
